Our Story

James N. Jannetides founded University Loft Company in 1986, while attending Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. James built a loft for his room to maximize space in his typically small dorm room. Other students admired his loft system, and that summer James invested his savings in enough wood to build 400 loft units. Upon returning to school, these high-demand lofts were sold to fellow students and that’s where ULC was born.

Today, ULC averages more than 1,200 university accounts per year, including the elite Yale University and Johns Hopkins University. Our commitment to quality is above and beyond what the rest of the market is doing. We know our customers may not be able to see the inside of every piece we build, but we construct it as if they could. Methods like mortise and tenon, dovetailing, glue and dowel ensure the strength and durability of our products.

University Loft Company is also significant in the military market as well. We have shipped to Okinawa, Japan and Saudi Arabia, and have a remote office in Japan.

In 2002 we entered the retail market and have expanded to 80 retailers across the nation. We have a 14,500 square foot showroom in High Point, NC and will have a 6,000 square foot showroom in Las Vegas, NV in 2007.

Our products are one of the best sellers for retailers because they appeal to both parents and children. In addition, ULC now has a hospitality product line that we are working with to provide guest room and lobby furniture to several national chains. Our 500,000 square foot Indianapolis warehouse manufactures all case goods, while our 600,000 square foot Tennessee facility manufactures upholstery.

We have been recognized by winning the Blue Chip Enterprise Award, 25 Fastest Growing Company in Indiana, and The Growth 100 in Indiana awards. Our president was voted in the 1999 40 under 40 award in Indianapolis and was recognized as the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year in Manufacturing.
